Terms of Service

Effective date: 12 May 2026
Last updated: 12 May 2026

1. About these Terms

These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your relationship with JAMES DUNCAN PIANO LTD (trading as JD Piano Studio) when you book or take piano lessons with us. By booking a lesson, you agree to these Terms.

  • Company: JAMES DUNCAN PIANO LTD (Company No. 16177774, registered in England and Wales)
  • Registered office (virtual): Bartle House, Oxford Court, Manchester M2 3WQ
  • Studio: 2 Bowden View, Shawe Road, Urmston, Manchester M41 5DL
  • Contact: hello@jdpianostudio.co.uk · +44 7984 753235

2. Who can take lessons

At this stage, we accept only adult learners (aged 18 and over). We may extend our services to younger students in the future, at which point additional safeguarding measures will apply.

We welcome students from all backgrounds, ability levels, and musical interests. If you have specific accessibility needs, please discuss them with us during your initial consultation so we can plan appropriate adjustments.

3. Booking lessons

Lessons are booked by contacting us directly by email (hello@jdpianostudio.co.uk) or phone (+44 7984 753235). We will confirm availability and agree on a lesson time with you in writing (by email or text message). A lesson is considered booked once we have confirmed it.

We do not currently operate an online booking system. (One is planned for a future phase.)

4. Lessons

Format: All lessons are currently delivered in person at our studio (2 Bowden View, Shawe Road, Urmston, Manchester M41 5DL). We do not currently offer online lessons.

Duration: Lessons are available in 30, 45, or 60-minute sessions. The duration is agreed when you book.

Styles: James teaches across classical, jazz, pop, and musical theatre genres. Lessons are tailored to your interests and goals.

Exam preparation: Where you are preparing for an ABRSM (or equivalent) examination, James will support your preparation. Booking the exam itself, and any associated fees, are your responsibility.

5. Fees and payment

Current rates are not published on our website. Please contact us for current pricing — rates depend on lesson duration and frequency.

Payment is due as agreed when you book. We currently accept payment by cash or bank transfer. An online card payment option is planned for a future phase.

We can provide receipts on request.

6. Cancellation by you (the student)

We understand that life sometimes gets in the way. Our cancellation policy is:

  • More than 24 hours’ notice before your lesson: you can reschedule free of charge to a mutually convenient date.
  • Less than 24 hours’ notice before your lesson: the lesson will be counted as used and is not refundable.

If you are unable to attend at short notice due to illness or genuine emergency, please contact us as early as possible. We will do our best to accommodate genuine circumstances, but we cannot guarantee free rescheduling.

7. Cancellation by us

If we need to cancel a lesson for any reason (illness, unavoidable circumstances), we will give you as much notice as possible. In every case where we cancel a confirmed lesson, you may choose between a free reschedule to a mutually convenient date, or a full refund of the lesson fee.

8. Late arrival

If you arrive late, your lesson will still end at the original scheduled time. We are unable to extend lessons because of student lateness, as we may have other commitments after your session.

9. Studio rules and conduct

To make sure the studio remains a safe and welcoming environment, the studio is a non-smoking, alcohol- and drug-free environment. We ask all students to treat instruments, sheet music, and the premises with care. We reserve the right to refuse or end a lesson if a student’s behaviour is abusive, threatening, or unsafe.

10. Health, accessibility, and reasonable adjustments

We are committed to making lessons accessible. If you have any health condition, disability, or accessibility need, please tell us during your initial consultation. We will discuss reasonable adjustments with you (for example, lesson pacing, alternative learning materials, or seating arrangements).

The studio is located at a private address; access details, including any limitations on step-free access, will be discussed during booking.

11. Intellectual property

Any teaching materials we produce or share with you (lesson plans, written exercises, practice notes) remain the property of JAMES DUNCAN PIANO LTD. You are welcome to use them for your personal practice; please do not redistribute, sell, or share them more widely without our written permission.

You retain full ownership of any recordings you make of your own playing or compositions.

12. Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, JAMES DUNCAN PIANO LTD’s liability for any claim arising out of or in connection with the lessons is limited to the value of the lesson fee paid for the affected lesson.

Nothing in these Terms limits or excludes our liability for: death or personal injury caused by our negligence; fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation; or any other liability that cannot be limited or excluded by law.

You are responsible for your own personal property at the studio. We recommend you do not bring valuable items that are not needed for your lesson.

13. Data protection

We handle your personal information in accordance with our Privacy Policy, which forms part of these Terms.

14. Refunds

Please see our separate Refund Policy for details of when refunds may be available.

15. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. If you have an active booking, we will notify you of any material change. The current version always applies.

16. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales. Any dispute that cannot be resolved between us shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.
